Literary Merit

It is supposed that once a writer has written a piece that has been termed brilliant by the general public, that piece actually becomes brilliant.
Does literary merit not have a place in this determination at all? Or is judgment of quality based on acceptance of the story?
Harry Potter not only had a great story, he came to life.
Can there be greatness in a story with a 2D character, lousy dialog and predictable sequences?
Or am I just a snob?

  1. I would say that popularity and literary merit are two different things, and I think our culture recognizes that. 'Though, I think we can become snobs when we declare a work merit-less on the basis of popularity, excessive or absent.
