Unanswered Sunsets

As I lay here staring straight into the unanswered sunsets that rise unashamedly at the start of each thought.

As I glance around for the questioner to appear. Whose words and utterings will make sense out of the deep yellow shadowed by a hint of orange.

The footsteps draw unerringly closer
But always stay just that little bit far away
Conforming to the theory that you and I can never meet
That the halfway mark will always keep us just that little bit apart.

I mark time not by dropping grains of sand within the glass walls, but by taking each grain, and tossing it into the sea. And as I watch each individual wish brought down by the natural forces of gravity, I wonder why it could not have sailed away across the ocean. Once. Just this once.

Circles. Squares. Tears.

Shapes that mold my words. My thoughts into feelings. Into strands to be held and scattered.

And still those sunsets rise. And those footsteps echo. Each step passing over my grains of sand.
